Tips & Tricks

The filters are the core of every air-con unit, as it is where air passes through and circulates through the system. At the same time, dirt also passes through the filter with the airflow, and when passed through the evaporator coil, will affect heat absorption. Your dirt filters will disrupt the normal flow of air, resulting in reduced efficiency.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Replace or clean your filters at regular intervals, preferably every month or two
  • A unit in constant use may require more attention paid to its filters, or if you have fur-bearing pets in the house.
Apart from its filters, your air-conditioner’s evaporator coil and condenser coil collects dirt on its own over time. Despite having a regularly maintained filter, dirt will still accumulate on the coils, which will impair its ability to absorb heat. For outdoor condenser coils, you can observe if dirt collects on its fins.

WHAT TO DO:

  • A clean filter prevents the evaporator coil from soiling quickly.
  • Check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary.
  • Minimize dirt and debris near the condenser unit.
Coil fins are located on the evaporator and condenser coils. These can become bent easily and cause a blockage to airflow through the coils.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Use a tool called a "fin comb" to comb your fins into its original position.
Drain channels in your air-conditioner help to reduce humidity, and any clogging of the channels will cause moisture to form. This can cause discoloration to your walls or any household items.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Stick a stiff wire through your drain channels every once in a while to get rid of any clogs.
Air-conditioner maintenance is not a simple task. You will require several tools and equipment, and a certain level of skill and experience to know what to look out for. Having a weak grasp of how to service and clean your air-conditioner unit may result in more problems. It would be a wiser choice to hire a professional technician, as they would be more familiar with the various problems of air-conditioners.
